About the practice

A creative and technical practice for useful AI.

I build AI tools and automations that make everyday work clearer, lighter and easier to continue.

Attention is a technical skill.

I’m Jacob McClelland, a computational linguist and applied AI builder in Lakewood, Colorado. Creative by Jake is where I bring writing, systems thinking and practical implementation together.

Since 2023, I’ve built and refined AI workflows across sports analytics and professional practices, alongside training and evaluation work for Snorkel AI. Since 2020, I’ve also worked in marketing and content. The common thread is simple: a useful tool should make sense in its data model, its language and the moment when a person reaches for it.

How I tend to work

  • Start with the actual task and the person doing it.
  • Keep source information, decisions and output distinct.
  • Write for a reader, then make review and handoff part of the workflow.

A little more context

My M.A. in computational semantics is from the University of Colorado Boulder (2021), where I studied semantic drift in pandemic-era Twitter data. I earned a B.A. in linguistics, magna cum laude, with a minor in Chicano Studies from Metropolitan State University of Denver (2015).

Before most of my work moved digital, I spent years in electrical work and bar work. Both taught me to trace a system, notice small details and make the next step clear.

Let’s make the next useful thing.
